Being an East Coast resident suffering with back pain for many years, I made an appointment in 2001 to see a well-known doctor at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. 

The doctor and I discussed my condition in detail. What I learned during that office visit was frightening.  He informed me that the only way to alleviate my pain was with major surgery including:

  • insertion of rods and pins

  • bone grafting with the possibility of disease transmission

  • risks including infection, nerve damage, anesthetic risk, vascular damage

  • postoperative  brace wear during a lengthy recuperation period

Not to mention the fact that I was also told there are no guarantees regarding the results of surgery and possible failure of fusion could require further surgery.  I left his office hopeless and depressed.  Needless to say, I never went back.

That was several years ago and I had since been living in pain and unable to live a normal life.
